A Child's Toy Carried Across a Border

Among the practical items packed for a migration, a child's single favourite toy often survives the cull that everything else undergoes during the packing process. Parents packing under weight limits and hard decisions will frequently make room for it anyway, recognising, even amid the upheaval, how much stability a familiar object can offer a child.
That toy often becomes, without anyone intending it, the clearest physical link between the old life and the new one being built. While furniture, clothing and household items are replaced or left behind entirely, the toy travels the whole distance intact, a small constant amid everything else that has changed around it.
Decades later, that same toy sometimes survives as an adult's most treasured possession, less for its own sake than for what it represents. It is the one thing that made the entire journey with them, unchanged, while everything around it was entirely rebuilt from scratch in a new country.
