A Family Joke That Only Works in One Language

Certain family jokes depend entirely on a pun or a double meaning that exists in only one language, understood by nobody who lacks it. This makes the joke effectively unable to travel outside the household that first coined it, however hard someone tries to explain it afterwards to a newcomer.
These jokes become a private marker of belonging, understood instantly by anyone who shares the family's first language from childhood. They are met with polite confusion by anyone who does not share that language, however carefully the joke is explained afterwards in translation to try and bridge the gap.
Losing fluency in that first language often means losing access to the joke as well, one small casualty among many over time. It is a piece of shared family humour that quietly stops working once nobody left in the room can hear the original pun clearly enough to laugh at it.
