Journeys Only Understood in Hindsight

Many migrants describe not fully understanding the significance of their own journey until years afterwards, sometimes decades after the fact. They were too occupied at the time with the immediate practical demands of leaving and arriving to grasp what the experience actually meant for the shape of the rest of their life.
This delayed understanding often arrives gradually through later reflection, prompted by watching children grow up in a country the parent still sometimes feels like a visitor in. It can also arrive through a chance conversation that suddenly reframes a decision made hastily decades earlier, without much thought at the time.
Recognising that understanding often lags well behind experience explains why some of the richest migration stories are told not soon after the journey but decades later. Only once enough time has passed does the story's true weight finally become clear to the person who lived it. Few migrants describe understanding the full shape of their own journey while they were still living it.
