Letters That Were Never Sent, Kept Anyway

Occasionally a family archive contains a letter that was clearly finished, sealed, sometimes even stamped, but never actually posted to its intended recipient. It was kept instead in a drawer for reasons the writer rarely explained afterwards, the intended recipient never receiving the words written specifically for them at the time.
These unsent letters often carry more raw honesty than the letters that were actually sent and received by someone. They were written without the self-censorship that comes from knowing the words will genuinely be read by their intended audience, and are therefore more revealing about what the writer actually felt at that moment.
Reading such a letter years later puts the reader in an unusual position they did not expect to occupy. They are receiving words never meant to reach anyone, a strange, slightly uncomfortable privilege that comes with its own quiet responsibility to handle the material with real care.
