Letters written home during the early years of a migration often adopt a noticeably more formal register than the family's usual everyday speech at home. Careful phrasing was chosen deliberately, perhaps to reassure worried relatives or to present a more composed version of an often difficult experience unfolding far away.
This formality can make old letters feel oddly distant on first reading today, less personal than expected from someone so close to the writer. It becomes clear, though, that the careful language itself is doing real emotional work, managing worry across a distance too great for a more casual tone to safely bridge.
Reading between these careful lines, noticing what the formal language is working to reassure rather than reveal directly, often tells a fuller story. It reveals more than the letters' literal content alone, a formal surface concealing a much more anxious reality underneath the careful, measured words. Letters written this carefully rarely read as coldly as their formality first suggests.
