The Official Story and the Private One

Many migration accounts exist in two versions within the same family, an official, tidier story told to outsiders and new acquaintances, and a fuller, more complicated private version reserved for closer family. Each version is shaped by who is listening rather than by any actual difference in the underlying facts of what happened.
The official version often smooths over hardship, legal difficulty or family conflict, presenting the journey as more straightforward than it actually was at the time. It is a version easier to tell quickly and without needing to explain painful context to someone who has not yet earned that level of trust.
Recognising that both versions exist, and understanding why the gap between them was created in the first place, matters when trying to record a fuller family history. The private version, however uncomfortable it might be to hear, usually holds the more complete and genuinely useful account of what really happened.
