When a Parent Becomes a Person You Did Not Know
Launch library · evergreen read

Listening closely enough to a parent's own story can produce a strange, sometimes disorienting effect over time as more detail accumulates. The familiar figure of mother or father gradually reveals a fuller person underneath, someone with a history, desires and struggles that predate and extend well beyond their role in the listener's own life.
This shift rarely happens all at once, arriving instead through accumulated detail shared across many conversations over months or years. A parent mentioned as young, ambitious, frightened or in love in ways the listener had never previously imagined possible, given how thoroughly they had come to be defined by parenthood alone in the listener's mind.
Reaching this fuller understanding usually deepens rather than complicates the relationship between the two people involved. It replaces a flattened, role-based image with something closer to the truth, a whole person who happened, among everything else, to also become a parent along the way, without ever stopping being themselves.
