A Journey That Ends in a House Nobody Had Seen

Some migrations concluded with a family arriving at a house arranged entirely by someone else, a relative or sponsor, sight unseen by anyone in the family. The family's first glimpse of their new home came only after the long journey to reach it had already been completed in full, with no chance to prepare beforehand.

This particular kind of arrival carries its own distinct anxiety, months of imagining a place that turns out, on arrival, to be entirely different from expectation. Sometimes it proves better, sometimes considerably harder than expected, but it is always a surprise either way for the family stepping through the door for the first time.

Families who experienced this often describe the first walk through the door as its own separate, significant moment within the larger journey. It stood as a final, private arrival that mattered as much as the border crossing or flight that had preceded it earlier that same journey.
