Certain family objects, despite being handled and used for years by everyone in the household, somehow never appear in a single photograph. They are present at every gathering yet consistently overlooked by whoever happened to be holding the camera. Attention naturally focuses instead on the people rather than the things quietly surrounding them.
This absence becomes noticeable only once the object is gone, when a family searching for any visual record realises there simply is none. Only descriptions and memory remain to rely on for something that was, in daily life, entirely unremarkable. It seemed too ordinary, at the time, to be worth documenting deliberately.
The lesson often arrives too late to help with the object already lost to time. But it changes how families treat what remains, prompting a deliberate effort to photograph the ordinary, ever present things. Not just the special occasions everyone naturally reaches for a camera to record without thinking twice.
