A tin that once held a specific food, biscuits, tea, sweets bought only on special occasions, sometimes gets kept long after its original contents are gone entirely. It gets repurposed to hold buttons or thread instead, but never quite loses its earlier identity in the family's collective memory of what it once contained.
Opening such a tin, even decades later, can produce a small jolt of recognition that catches a person off guard. The faint lingering smell, or simply the familiar shape and colour, is enough to summon the occasion it was first associated with, regardless of what practical use it currently serves in the household.
